James Chan, Ph.D., President of Asia Marketing and Management, coaches U.S. executives and managers in marketing premium-quality products and professional services to China and other Asian countries and on building business relationships there. He coined the phrase “the C.H.I.N.A. formula” to help executives understand what to think of China and how to conduct themselves in a complex foreign marketplace.

Born in China and educated in Hong Kong and the U.S., James Chan (陈华江) founded his consulting practice in 1983 after he had succeeded in exporting American-made products to China, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (HBJ), a Fortune 500 publishing company. He has advised more than 100 technology, manufacturing, publishing, and association clients on business strategies including the promotion and marketing of American goods and services in Asia and management of partners, customers, and suppliers.
Dr. James Chan was the first person the American Management Association (AMA) commissioned in 1996 to create and lead a three-day course titled “Business Skills for the China Market.” There, he began his extensive mentoring and coaching experience with Fortune 1000 executives in New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, San Diego and Brussels, Belgium.
Dr. Chan is a member of the Greater Philadelphia Senior Executives Group (GPSEG) a professional association of 1,000 senior-level executives. He is a member of the Philadelphia District Export Council of the U.S. Department of Commerce, and a long-time member of the 200-person Mid-Atlantic Consultants Network in Philadelphia.
An animated public speaker in three languages — English, Mandarin Chinese (putonghua) and Cantonese — James Chan received his Ph.D. in Chinese geography from the University of Michigan in 1977, M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1973, and B.A. from the University of Hong Kong in 1970.
He is the author of the book, Spare Room Tycoon on how executives can turn their personal passion into viable businesses that reflect the final stage of accomplishment: self realization.
